International anti-corruption center established

The International Anti-Corruption Coordination Centre (IACCC) has been established in London on the basis of theNational Crime Agency (NCA).

The initiative to create the Center was announced during the Anti-Corruption Summit held in London in May 2016, which brought together representatives of 43 countries. The purpose of its activities will be to ensure cooperation between law enforcement agencies of different countries in the investigation and prosecution of corrupt elites and the return of stolen assets.

In addition to NCA, the IACCC includes agencies of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Singapore and the USA:

  • Australian Federal Police;
  • Royal Canadian Mounted Police;
  • New Zealand Police;
  • New Zealand's Serious Fraud Office ( SFO);
  • Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau of the Republic of Singapore ( CPIB);
  • Federal Bureau of Investigation ( FBI).

Interpol (International Criminal Police Organization) will also join the international initiative next year. Germany and Switzerland, which participated in the establishment of the Center, will remain as observers for the time being.

Speaking about the significance of the creation of such an international institution, experts note that at present only a small part of countries that have established anti-corruption law enforcement mechanisms have joined the Center, while such countries as Brazil, China, some European countries, corruption in the highest echelons of power of which is widely known, have remained outside the coordination of the Center. At the same time, according to information on the NCA website, law enforcement authorities of countries that are not members of the IACCC, can also send information to it about cases of corruption in the government.

At the same time, the creation of the Center, which will operate on the basis of the NCA until 2021, creates risks of duplication of functions of the International Corruption Unit (ICU) created last year and, accordingly, unnecessary expenditure of resources.
