World tennis associations to check work of TIU

The governing bodies of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), Women's Tennis Association (WTA), International Tennis Federation (ITF) and Grand Slam tournaments have established the Independent Review Panel (IRP) amid suspicions that a number of tennis players are involved in match-fixing.

On February 12, the Terms of Reference and Protocol of the Independent Review Panel were published, setting out the Commission's tasks and powers.

The IRP will consist of three members headed by British lawyer Adam Lewis, who will announce the names of two more at the end of February.

The IRP is tasked with evaluating the effectiveness and appropriateness of the current anti-corruption instruments: the Tennis Anti-Corruption Program (TACP), the Tennis Integrity Protection Program (TIPP), and the Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU), and proposing measures to improve them.

The IRP will have broad powers, including the right to request any documents it deems appropriate, interview individuals, engage any experts and enter into confidential agreements. In conducting the independent review, the IRP will engage with all stakeholders, including international organizations, law enforcement agencies and tennis betting operators.

There is no fixed timeframe for the independent review in the Protocol, but it is anticipated that it could take at least a year, during which time an interim report will be published, after which all stakeholders will have the opportunity to provide comments that will be taken into account in the preparation of the final report.
