The establishment of the Center was announced and supported during the G20 Leaders' Summit held on September 4-5, 2016 in Hangzhou (China). The main objective of the Center is to contribute to improving the effectiveness of international cooperation on the return of corrupt fugitives and stolen assets.
According to the head of the new Center Huang Feng (Huang Feng), the main tasks of its activities will be:
- Conducting comparative analysis of the provisions of China's regulations and sets of rules with those of those countries to which Chinese officials accused of corruption are most likely to flee;
- cooperating in tracking down criminals fleeing outside the country;
- improving laws and mechanisms for their practical application with regard to repatriation of corrupt officials and return of stolen assets;
- studying illegal investment and immigration policy frameworks to make it more difficult for corrupt officials to obtain citizenship in foreign countries.
