APEC Expert Working Group on Anti-Corruption and Transparency meets

On February 22-23, the 22nd meeting of the APEC Anti-Corruption and Transparency Expert Working Group (ACT) was held.

The meeting discussed the topic of bribery in international commercial transactions.

According to Pablo Sanchez, Chair of the Working Group and Attorney General of Peru, "corruption becomes an obstacle to foreign and domestic investment, distorts competition, impedes the proper functioning of markets, and contributes to the leakage of funds in both the economic and social spheres," noting that this is a trend not only in Peru, but throughout the Pacific region.

Given the complexity of the problem, the group agreed to strengthen the exchange of technical expertise to support the criminalization and prosecution of bribery cases. Officials also agreed on the need to create legal awareness and legislation, investigative procedures, as well as regulation of corporate responsibility and implementation of international standards.

The meeting also noted progress in the implementation of the APEC Anti-Corruption and Law Enforcement Network (ACT-NET), which is designed to enhance efforts to recover stolen assets and to share intelligence on corruption among APEC economies. The third ACT-NET coordination meeting will be held in Lima in August.
